Peter Daly CITP, BA, C. Eng.
Peter has over 25 years experience in the IT industry. He is currently working as a consultant using WebSphere/J2EE technologies. His interests lie in WebSphere Administration, Configuration, Security, Scalability, Performance, and DataPower technologies. Previously Peter worked on System Automation using Tivoli. He is a corporate member of the British Computer Society and a Chartered Engineer.
Prior to taking part in the automation project, Peter was a Senior Unix System Administrator. He was also Head of the Computing Infrastructure Group for a manufacturer of Super-Computers, where he was responsible for scalar-parallel and vector-parallel machines. Peter takes a pro-active role to system administration re-designing the corporate computing infrastructure by re-configuring routers, improving DNS, administering sendmail, tuning NFS, using NIS+, configuring NTP, re-configuring the firewall and creating Web sites.
From 1992-1996 he worked at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the brightest source of synchrotron X-radiation in the world. It is situated in Grenoble, France at the foot of the Alps. There he was a Unix System Administrator, where he was responsible for the maintainance and configuration of UNIX machines in the experimental stations as well as the desktop. These systems were predominantly Sun and Hewlett Packard, but there were also some Linux, Silicon Graphics, IBM AIX and DEC Ultrix machines. During his time in France, Peter was involved at an early stage with Web Design, where he created one of the first web sites in France. He has carried this knowledge through to his other positions.
Before turning to system administration Peter spent several years as a software engineer using the C and C++ Programming Languages and various development tools to create GUI front ends for original and third-party software as well as critical software libraries. Peter worked at Daresbury Laboratory, one of the first synchrotrons dedicated to research. He collaborated on the Protein Crystallography project and wrote much of the library code for the software. His work is being used in many leading laboratories throughout the world particularly in the pharmaceutical industry.
